Weight Loss Sabotage: Active vs. Fit

When it comes to excuses for not exercising, I have heard everything..

Sometimes the excuse is external: I don’t have the time. Other times it’s pure procrastination: I’m going to start as soon as tax season is over.

And then there are excuses that are downright humorous: I don’t like sweating.

I politely point out to these well-meaning excuse makers that even though they don’t want to do it, exercise is a vital part of creating a strong, healthy and attractive figure.

I tell them that if they would simply exercise 2 – 4 times per week they would experience a significant improvement in their daily life, starting with renewed energy, strength and mood.

Then I explain the health benefits and how many of their issues would greatly improve or even disappear. I talk about how amazing they will feel and look, dropping those extra pounds and rediscovering a more slim body.

Even with all my experience in excuse crushing, there used to be an excuse that would always leave me miffed.

That sneaky excuse of ‘I’m active’:  Oh, I don’t need to exercise with a personal trainer — I’m very active. I play golf and tennis and Wii.

Well, that is a good excuse, right? Golf, tennis and Wii are activities that burn calories. Maybe you can be fit without doing any other exercise.

But then I started noticing a pattern…

The golf and tennis people couldn’t touch their toes in a simple flexibility test and couldn’t jump rope for 60 seconds. The Wii players needed a week to recover from a personal training workout. The so-called active people encountered injury after injury on their own.

And then it came to me:  You can’t become fit simply by being active. Only by being fit can you become more active.

To be lean and to sustain a level of fitness there is no ample replacement for a consistent, challenging exercise program. It’s the only way, my friends.

True fitness is when your body is able to do nearly whatever you ask of it. This peak state and ability comes from a combination of flexibility, strength and endurance.

So, let me ask again, do you exercise? Or are you kidding yourself with the notion of “being active”?

How do you feel about your current level of health and fitness? Are you able to do each and everything you want? Or do you opt out of activities that you know would be too challenging? Can you hike that mountain trail with your kids?

If you’ve used the excuse of being active in the past, take a minute to rethink it. Don’t count on your active lifestyle with the hope of getting true fitness results.
